Media Pro Tom Corr came into this world in the North Dublin Fingal town of Rush on July 23, 1948.
Leo the lion is his star sign.
He decided against following the footsteps of his fisherman and deep sea sailor dad, who traveled the world on the Empress ocean liners of Canadian Pacific Steamships.
Instead he opted to remain on dry land, to pursue writing and journalism. He has carved out a successful career in news and internet media.
He has been a news journalist most of his working life, and an internet entrepreneur and website developer for 6 years.
Tom was privileged to attend St. Maur’s National School, Rush, during his formative years from the age of 4. He graduated to the “big school” in De La Salle College, Skerries, aged 18, where he encountered Shakespeare, Yeats, Virgil and Latin.
He continued his self-education with a marketing course in Dundalk Institute of Technology. But he has learned much more – the sort of skills you can’t pick up in a classroom – from the University of Life!
Tom was a regional newspaper editor for 20 years. He took inspiration from the great American journalist Finley Peter Dunne, who said the job of a newspaper is to “comfort the afflicted, afflict the comfortable.”
In a varied reporting career, Tom wrote on the Israel-Lebanon conflict, reporting from South Lebanon while embedded with UN peacekeepers in 1999. He was a court reporter for many years. He covered politics, the Irish troubles, and Pope John Paul’s visit to Drogheda, where he pleaded with the IRA to end violence.
A skilled writer, communicator and marketer, he became Public Relations Officer for Ireland’s international music festival, Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann, for three years.
Tom’s first involvement with the internet came in 2002, when he build a hobby website on one of his favorite subjects – book quotations. Today his quotes site attracts nearly 800,000 visitors monthly, and he owns a network of sites, and runs a media consultancy and website development business.
When not working on his latest internet or media project, Tom likes to swim, play some music on his Seagull semi-accoustic guitar, or just chill out at his Tipperary home with his wife – and, whenever they visit, their twin sons and two daughters.
